He began his career in vaudeville before transitioning into film in the early 1910s. Louis appeared in over 150 films, often in supporting roles, throughout his career. He also directed and wrote several films, including the 1920 film "The Great Accident," which he also starred in. Louis was known for his versatility as an actor, and was equally adept at both comedic and dramatic roles. He was married to actress Claire McDowell from 1913 until his death in 1926 from a heart attack at the age of 44.
