Mario Mutis (July 25, 1947 Viña del Mar-) is a Chilean singer, bassist and percussionist.
He is best known for his work as the bassist and founding member of the renowned Chilean rock band, Los Jaivas. Mutis was born into a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a very young age. He began to learn to play the guitar when he was just seven years old and continued to develop his skills over the years.
In 1963, Mutis co-founded the band Los Jaivas along with his brother Eduardo, Claudio Parra, and Gabriel Parra. The band quickly gained a large following in Chile and throughout Latin America for their unique blend of indigenous and folk music with rock and roll. Mutis was an integral part of the band's sound, providing strong basslines and percussion that helped create their distinctive sound.
Over the years, Los Jaivas released a number of successful albums and toured extensively throughout Latin America and Europe. Mutis also collaborated with other musicians and artists throughout his career, including working with the Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos and composing music for film and television.
Today, Mario Mutis is considered a legend in the Chilean music scene and remains an important figure in the history of Latin American rock music.
One of Mutis' most notable projects outside of Los Jaivas was his work as a composer for television and film. He composed music for the Chilean films "El Chacal de Nahueltoro" and "La Frontera" in the 1970s, as well as the children's TV series "31 Minutos" in the 2000s.
In addition to his music career, Mutis is also known for his humanitarian work. He has been involved with various organizations that aim to promote social justice and human rights, including the Human Rights Commission of Chile and the Chilean foundation, Fundación Vínculos. Mutis has also been a vocal advocate for the protection of Chilean indigenous cultures and heritage.
In recent years, Mutis has continued to perform with Los Jaivas on occasion, as well as work on solo projects. He released an album of solo bass compositions titled "Paso a Paso" in 2018. Despite his many accomplishments, Mutis remains humble and dedicated to his craft, and his contributions to Latin American music and culture will be felt for generations to come.
