Edward Downes (June 17, 1924 Birmingham-July 10, 2009 Zürich) a.k.a. Sir Edward Thomas "Ted" Downes, Edward Thomas Downes, Sir Edward Downes or Ted Downes was a British conductor and opera conductor. His children are called Caractacus Downes and Boudicca Downes.

Edward Downes began his career as a repetiteur at the Royal Opera House in London, where he worked alongside renowned conductors such as Georg Solti and Colin Davis. He later went on to conduct at the Royal Opera House himself, and also worked as the principal conductor of the BBC Philharmonic and the Netherlands Radio Orchestra.
Downes was known for his interpretations of the works of Verdi, Wagner, and Puccini, and was highly respected in the opera world. Over the course of his career, he conducted productions at many of the world's most famous opera houses, including La Scala in Milan and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
In addition to his work as a conductor, Downes was also an advocate for contemporary music, and worked closely with many composers of the 20th century. He was awarded a Knighthood in 1991 for his services to music.
