Maki Ishii was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1936. He showed an early interest in music and attended the Tokyo University of the Arts where he studied under Tomojiro Ikenouchi and Akira Miyoshi. Ishii went on to become a renowned composer, his music combining traditional Japanese music with contemporary Western classical music. He composed music for films, television, and classical ensembles.
Ishii's style was heavily influenced by his interest in percussion and the use of non-Western percussion instruments. He incorporated traditional Japanese percussion into his compositions and was known for his use of the taiko drum. In addition to his film scores and classical compositions, Ishii also collaborated with prominent musicians such as the Kronos Quartet and the percussion ensemble Les Percussions de Strasbourg.
