Bendel studied music in Prague and Leipzig, where he was strongly influenced by the works of Robert Schumann. He went on to become a successful composer and pianist, known for his romantic and virtuosic piano compositions.
Bendel's works were often performed by the leading pianists of the time, including Franz Liszt, who praised his music for its originality and beauty. Bendel was also a sought-after piano teacher, and his students included many notable musicians, such as Ferruccio Busoni and Carl Friedberg.
