He served as a Member of Parliament for the Buem constituency in the Volta Region of Ghana from 2005 until his death in 2012. Kamel was a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) political party in Ghana and also served as the Deputy Volta Regional Minister during the late Prof. John Evans Atta Mills' administration. Prior to being elected to Parliament, he worked as a businessman and was also involved in community development projects. His sudden death was widely mourned by the people of Ghana and he was posthumously awarded the Order of the Volta in recognition of his service to the country.
