He started his career in the entertainment industry in the 1960s and became known for his work in Cantonese films. Throughout his career, James Yi Lui appeared in over 180 films, including "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", "The Sword of Swords", and "The House of 72 Tenants".

Aside from acting, James Yi Lui also directed and wrote screenplays for a few of his films, showcasing his skills beyond just being in front of the camera. He was also a talented singer and released several albums throughout his career.
