Katalin Karády (December 8, 1910 Budapest-February 8, 1990 New York City) also known as Karady Katalin, Katalin Kanczler or Karády Katalin was a Hungarian singer and actor.
She died as a result of cancer.
Karády began her career as a cabaret singer in Budapest in the 1930s and became known for her sultry voice and style. She later transitioned to acting and appeared in numerous films, including the 1940 film "Pál utcai fiúk" which became a cultural icon in Hungary.
During World War II, Karády's Jewish heritage became a target for the fascist Arrow Cross Party, who accused her of being a spy and had her arrested. After being released, she fled to Portugal and eventually made her way to the United States where she continued to perform.
Despite her success abroad, Karády was later blacklisted by the Hungarian government for her perceived political beliefs and was unable to return to her home country until after the fall of communism in 1989.
