He made his directorial debut with the film Tata Manavadu in 1972 and went on to direct over 150 films in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi languages. He is known for his socially relevant films and has won several awards including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu for his film Meghasandesam in 1983.

Apart from his work in the film industry, Dasari Narayana Rao has also served as a member of parliament in the Indian parliament and held various ministerial positions.
