He started his acting career in the late 1940s and went on to act in over 200 films in various languages including Hindi, Bengali, and Assamese. He was known for his versatile acting skills and portrayed a wide range of characters on screen. Some of his notable performances include his roles in films like Devdas (1955), Jagte Raho (1956), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957), and Subarnarekha (1965). He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974 for his contributions to the arts. Modak passed away on his 78th birthday in 1993.
