Elsie Mackay was born into a wealthy family in India and spent most of her childhood in England attending private schools. In her early 20s, she pursued a career in acting and appeared in several films, including "The Glorious Adventure" and "The Flying Scotsman." Mackay also had a talent for interior design and launched a successful business creating stylish and modern living spaces.
But it was her love of aviation that brought her the most recognition. In 1927, Mackay set her sights on becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She purchased a plane and enlisted the help of experienced pilot Captain Walter G. R. Hinchliffe to join her on the journey. Unfortunately, on March 13, 1928, the pair and their plane disappeared without a trace over the Atlantic. To this day, the exact cause of their disappearance remains a mystery.
