Otomo is best known for creating the influential cyberpunk manga series Akira, which he wrote and illustrated from 1982 to 1990. The series was later adapted into an animated film in 1988, which Otomo directed and co-wrote the screenplay for. The film is widely regarded as a landmark in Japanese animation and helped popularize anime in the West.
