Hjelmeland is a graduate of the Theatrology Department of the University of Bergen, and began his career as an actor in the mid-1990s. He gained nationwide recognition in the early 2000s for his role as the character of Lars in the popular Norwegian sitcom titled "Mot i Brøstet" (1995-1997).
