She is best known for her popular children's book series that follows the adventures of the creative and independent young girl, "Lillebror og Knerten" (Little Brother and Twig). The series was adapted into a successful film in 2001. Vestly was also a prominent figure in Norwegian radio, hosting several programs throughout her career. In addition to her writing and broadcasting work, she was also an accomplished actor, appearing in several films and television shows. Vestly was a recipient of numerous awards throughout her life, including the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation's Honorary Award in 1990 and the King's Medal of Merit in Gold in 2000.
