Juan Ruiz de Alarcón

Juan Ruiz de Alarcón (April 5, 1580 Taxco-August 4, 1639 Madrid) also known as Juan Ruiz de Alarcon, Don Juan Ruíz de Alarcón y Mendoza or Don Juan Ruiz de Alarcon y Mendoza was a Spanish writer, actor and lawyer.

He was born in Taxco, Mexico and lived most of his life in New Spain (Mexico City). He studied law at a university in Mexico City and later moved to Spain to pursue a legal career, but found greater success as a writer and actor. He wrote plays in both Spanish and Latin and is considered one of the greatest Spanish playwrights of the Golden Age. His plays often dealt with social issues and were praised for their wit, humor and satire. He also wrote poetry, essays and a novel. In addition to his literary success, he was appointed to several important legal positions in Madrid, where he spent the last years of his life. He died at the age of 59 and was buried in the church of San Sebastián in Madrid.
