Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Spanish parents, Celia Gámez began her career as a singer and dancer in various nightclubs and theaters. She eventually moved to Madrid, Spain where she became a star in the Spanish entertainment industry during the 1930s and 40s. Gámez acted in numerous Spanish films and in 1946, she founded her own production company, Celia Gámez Producciones, where she produced and starred in several successful shows.
Gámez was known for her flamenco-inspired performances and her ability to play both comedic and dramatic roles. She was a prominent figure in the Spanish cinema industry during the Franco regime and was favored by the dictator himself. In fact, Francisco Franco was known to often attend her shows and would frequently reward her with gifts and honors.
After the Franco regime ended, Gámez continued to perform and produce shows until her retirement in the early 1980s. Throughout her career, she received numerous awards and accolades, including the Gold Medal of Fine Arts from the Spanish government in 1989. She passed away on December 10, 1992 in Buenos Aires, Argentina at the age of 87.
