Emmanuelle Arsan (January 19, 1932 Bangkok-June 12, 2005 Chantelouve) a.k.a. Marayat Rollet-Andriane, Marayat Andriane, Marayat Bibidh, Krasaesundh, Virajjakkam, Virajjakari, Marajat, Virajjakam, Krassaesibor, Bibidh, Kramsaseddinsh, Rollet - Andriane, Marayat or Mariah Bibid was a Thai novelist, actor, screenwriter and writer.
She is best known for her erotic novel "Emmanuelle," which she wrote in 1959 under the pen name Emmanuelle Arsan. The novel was initially banned in France and several other countries but later became a best-seller and was adapted into a film in 1974. Arsan also acted in the film and co-wrote the screenplay.
Born in Thailand as Marayat Bibidh, she was the daughter of a Thai mother and a French father. She grew up in a privileged household and attended boarding school in Switzerland. In the 1950s, she married French diplomat Louis-Jacques Rollet-Andriane and the couple traveled the world for his work.
Aside from "Emmanuelle," Arsan also wrote several other books, including "Laure," "Mystère," and "Voyage d'Emmanuel." She also acted in several other films, including "The Sand Pebbles" (1966) and "Qui? (1970).
Arsan passed away on June 12, 2005, at the age of 73, in her home in the French Alps.
