Clarens is best known for his seminal work, "An Illustrated History of the Horror Film," which was published in 1967 and remains a highly regarded reference book in the horror film genre. Prior to his work as a historian and writer, Clarens worked as an actor and cinematographer, performing in various Cuban films and television shows. After moving to the United States in the 1950s, Clarens continued to work in film and television, though he is best remembered for his contributions to film scholarship. In addition to "An Illustrated History of the Horror Film," he also wrote "Crime Movies" and "The Screen in Review," a collection of his film criticism. Clarens passed away in 1987 from complications related to pneumonia.
