M. P. Shankar began his career as a stage actor and later made his film debut in 1958 with the Kannada film "Bedara Kannappa". He went on to act in over 200 films in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam languages over a career spanning four decades. He was known for his roles as the antagonist and character roles in films.

Apart from acting, M. P. Shankar also produced and directed a few films, including the Kannada film "Om" which went on to become a cult classic. He was also a prolific screenwriter and wrote scripts for several of his own films as well as others.
