Sjumandjaja

Sjumandjaja (August 5, 1934 Batavia, Dutch East Indies-July 19, 1985 Jakarta) otherwise known as Sjuman Djaya, Sjuman Djada or Syumanjaya was an Indonesian actor, screenwriter, film director and film producer. He had three children, Djenar Maesa Ayu, Aksan Sjuman and Aridya Yudistira.

Sjumandjaja was a prolific figure in the Indonesian film industry, having directed and produced over 30 films in his career. He first started out in the industry as an actor, appearing in a number of films during the 1950s and 1960s, before transitioning to screenwriting, directing and producing.

Some of his most notable works as a director include the 1974 film "Cinta Pertama" (First Love) and the 1976 film "Pengantin Remaja" (Young Bride). He was also known for his work in theater, having founded the Bengkel Teater school in Jakarta in 1968.

In addition to his work in the arts, Sjumandjaja was a political activist and a prominent member of the Indonesian Communist Party. He was arrested and imprisoned following the 1965 coup, which resulted in the downfall of the Communist Party and the rise of the New Order regime. He was released from prison in 1977 and continued his work in the film industry until his death in 1985.
