He started his career as an actor in the silent film era and appeared in over 200 films across his career. Trowbridge was known for his versatility in portraying a range of roles, from supporting characters to villains. Some of his popular works include "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938), "The Invisible Man Returns" (1940), and "The War of the Worlds" (1953).

Apart from his acting career, Trowbridge was also a trained architect and had a degree in the same from the University of Pennsylvania. He had a successful career as an architect, and his notable works include the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Trowbridge was married twice in his lifetime, and he had two children from his second marriage. He lived in Los Angeles until his death in 1967.
