James W. W. Birch was a British colonial administrator who served as the first British Resident of the state of Perak, Malaysia. He arrived in Malaya in 1874 and was tasked with bringing order to the fractious state. He worked hard to modernize the state's administration and economy, but his reforms antagonized the ruling Malay chiefs, who viewed him as a threat to their power.

On November 2, 1875, James Birch was assassinated by several Malay nobles in Pasir Salak. His death sparked a series of conflicts known as the Perak War, which eventually led to the establishment of British colonial rule in Malaya. Today, Birch is remembered as a key figure in the history of Malaysia and a symbol of colonialism and imperialism.
