Malik Bendjelloul (September 14, 1977 Ystad-May 13, 2014 Stockholm) also known as Malik Bendjelloul Deauville or Malle was a Swedish film director, actor, film editor, screenwriter and film producer.
He died as a result of suicide.
Born to a Swedish mother and Algerian father, Malik Bendjelloul's interest in film-making began at a young age. After completing his studies in cinema and television at the school of Arts, Crafts and design in Stockholm, Bendjelloul quickly gained recognition for his unique style of film-making.
He is best known for his Academy Award-winning documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" (2012), which followed two Cape Town fans who searched for the whereabouts of '70s Mexican-American folk rock musician Sixto Rodriguez. The film was a critical and commercial success and won numerous awards globally.
Prior to his success with Searching for Sugar Man, Bendjelloul worked as a freelance journalist for Swedish radio and television.
His death at the age of 36 came as a shock to the film-making community, with many expressing their condolences and admiration for his creative talent.
