She began her career in the theater in Zurich before moving to the United States in 1893. She made her American stage debut in New York and became known for her comedic roles, often playing flirtatious and coquettish characters. Davenport appeared in several successful Broadway productions, including "The Waffle Woman," "Madame Sherry," and "The School for Scandal." She also acted in silent films, making her debut in "The House of Secrets" in 1929. Throughout her career, Davenport was known for her distinctive looks, with her bobbed hair and heavy eye makeup becoming somewhat of a trademark. She continued to act in films until her death in Los Angeles in 1936.

She was a friend of Wallis Simpson, who later became the Duchess of Windsor, and it was rumored that Furness had a romantic relationship with Edward VIII before he abdicated the throne to marry Simpson. Furness also had a relationship with the movie star Cary Grant, but they eventually ended their romance when Grant married someone else.
