Despite her success as an actress, Horney was also known for her outspoken political views. Horney also had a brief, but notable affair with the writer and political activist André Gide, whom she met while performing in a play in Paris in 1929. Later in life, Horney suffered from a stroke, which impacted her ability to continue acting. She passed away in 1988 at the age of 77 in Hamburg, Germany.
