Carybé

Carybé (February 7, 1911 Lanús-October 2, 1997 Salvador) also known as Héctor Julio Páride Bernabó, Caribé or Hector Julio Paride Bernabó was an Argentine painter, engraver, journalist, historian, screenwriter, actor, set decorator and production designer.

He spent his childhood in Buenos Aires and studied art at the National Academy of Fine Arts. In 1949, he traveled to Brazil, where he became fascinated with Afro-Brazilian culture and began to incorporate it into his work. He settled in Salvador, Bahia, in 1950 and became a Brazilian citizen in 1952.

Carybé was a prolific artist, producing murals, paintings, sculptures, and illustrations, as well as writing and acting in films and plays. He was particularly interested in the cultural and religious practices of the Afro-Brazilian communities, and his work often celebrated these traditions.
