Abulfaz Elchibey

Abulfaz Elchibey (June 24, 1938 Nakhichevan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic-August 22, 2000 Ankara) also known as Abulfaz Elcibay was an Azerbaijani politician.

Elchibey was a prominent opposition leader during the Soviet era, advocating for the independence of Azerbaijan. After Azerbaijan declared independence in 1991, he was elected as the country's first democratically-elected president in 1992. As president, Elchibey pursued a policy of political and economic reform, but his presidency was marked by political instability and conflict, including the outbreak of the Nagorno-Karabakh War with Armenia. In 1993, he was overthrown in a coup led by his former ally, Heydar Aliyev. Elchibey went into exile in Turkey, where he remained until his death in 2000. Despite his controversial legacy, he is still remembered as a symbol of Azerbaijan's struggle for independence and democracy.
