Magomayev was known as the "Soviet Sinatra" for his smooth and velvety crooning style. He was the first performer from the Soviet Union to give a solo concert at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1963. After his death in 2008, a statue was erected in his honor in Baku, Azerbaijan.
