In addition to his acting work, Darbyshire was also a skilled painter and wrote a number of plays and screenplays throughout his career. He was married to fellow actress Mary Armour from 1940 until her death in 1964. Darbyshire continued to work in theater and film until his death in 1979 at the age of 64.
