Eduard Zahariev (July 1, 1938 Moscow-June 26, 1996 Sofia) also known as Eduard Zahariev or Eduard Sachariev was a Bulgarian film director, screenwriter and actor.
He was born to Russian actor Alexander Zahariev and Bulgarian ballerina Nadezhda Tsvetkova. Eduard Zahariev's father was a well-known actor who immigrated to Bulgaria in the early 1930s and later became the artistic director of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre.
Eduard Zahariev studied at the Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts, and later attended the VGIK film school in Moscow. He began his career in the 1960s as an assistant director on several films, including "The Tied Up Balloon" and "The White Sheik".
In 1970, Zahariev directed his own film, "The Enchanted", which won awards at several international film festivals. He went on to direct more than 20 films, including "The Road to Damascus", "Christopher Columbus" and "The Paranoia Agent".
Zahariev was also an accomplished actor, appearing in several of his own films, as well as in the films of other directors, such as "The Carriage" and "The Boy Turns Man".
Throughout his career, Zahariev was known for his innovative and artistic approach to filmmaking, and was considered one of the leading figures of Bulgarian cinema. He died of a heart attack in 1996 at the age of 57.
