Youssef Chahine (January 25, 1926 Alexandria-July 27, 2008 Cairo) also known as Gabriel Youssef Chahine, Yussef Shahin, Youssef Shahine or Joe was an Egyptian film director, film producer, screenwriter and actor.

He is considered one of the most important and influential figures in the history of Egyptian and Arab cinema. Chahine directed over 40 films over the course of his 50-year career, tackling a wide range of topics such as politics, religion, and social issues. He was known for his unique style, which blended Egyptian and Western film techniques, as well as his use of symbolism and allegory in his films. Chahine received numerous awards for his work, including the Cannes Film Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, and is widely regarded as a pioneer of Egyptian and Arab cinema.
