Abebe Bikila
Abebe Bikila (August 7, 1932 Ethiopia-October 25, 1973 Addis Ababa) was an Ethiopian track and field athlete and athlete.
Abebe Bikila is most famously remembered for winning the gold medal in the marathon at the 1960 Summer Olympics held in Rome, Italy. This was the first time an African had won a gold medal in the marathon event. What made his win even more remarkable was that he competed barefoot due to his discomfort with the shoes provided to him.
Four years later, at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Bikila won the marathon once again, becoming the first athlete to win the event twice. This time, however, he ran with shoes on.
Apart from his Olympic medals, Bikila set several world records in men’s marathon throughout his athletic career, beating his own world record twice. His success and excellence in athletics, especially in long-distance running, helped put Ethiopia on the map in international sports.
After retiring from athletics, Bikila went on to become a working member of the Ethiopian government, serving in various government positions. He is remembered as one of Ethiopia’s most beloved and iconic sports figures, with an annual marathon held in his honor in the country.
He died as a result of cerebral hemorrhage.
