Despite his successful career, Denning has been the subject of controversy due to his involvement in the sexual abuse of minors. In 2014, he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for offenses committed against young boys between the 1960s and 1980s. Before that, he had already spent time in prison in the Czech Republic for similar crimes.

Denning's case has been part of a wider scandal involving numerous British celebrities who were found to have systematically abused young people over several decades.

He was known for promoting new music and working with emerging artists, helping to launch the careers of many successful bands and musicians.

In the 1970s, Denning moved on to work for the BBC, where he continued to host popular music shows. However, his career was soon overshadowed by allegations of sexual impropriety. Denning was eventually charged and convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault and other offenses, and he spent years in prison both in the UK and in the Czech Republic. His case, along with those of other prominent figures in the entertainment industry who were found guilty of abuse, helped to raise awareness of the problem of sexual exploitation and abuse of minors in the UK.
