He is best known as a member of the band Sparks, which he formed with his brother Ron Mael in 1971. Russell's distinctive high-pitched voice and flamboyant on-stage persona have been a hallmark of Sparks' music, which spans multiple genres including rock, pop, new wave, and electronic.
Prior to forming Sparks, Russell and Ron were involved in various musical projects, including the band Halfnelson. They released their self-titled debut album as Sparks in 1971, and went on to release over 20 studio albums and numerous singles over the course of their career.
In addition to his work with Sparks, Russell has also released solo material and collaborated with other musicians, including Franz Ferdinand on their collaborative album FFS in 2015. He has been noted for his fashion sense and distinctive stage presence, and has been a major influence on artists including Morrissey and Björk.
Russell Mael was born in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in Pacific Palisades. He attended Palisades High School, where he met his future bandmate and brother Ron. After high school, the brothers attended UCLA, where they formed the band Halfnelson. They were eventually signed to Todd Rundgren's Bearsville Records, and released their debut album as Halfnelson in 1971. However, the band struggled to find success, and Russell and Ron subsequently changed the band's name to Sparks.
Sparks' early music drew influences from the glam rock movement of the early 1970s, but they soon developed their own unique sound that combined art rock, pop, and electronic music. The band's breakthrough came in 1975 with the release of the album Kimono My House, which spawned the hit singles "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" and "Amateur Hour". Sparks continued to release critically acclaimed albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, cementing their status as one of the most innovative and influential bands of their era.
In addition to his music career, Russell has also dabbled in acting. He appeared in the 1977 film Rollercoaster and played the character Klaus Nomi in the 2003 film The Nomi Song. He has also made guest appearances on various television shows, including Gilmore Girls and The Big Bang Theory.
