George Balanchine

George Balanchine (January 22, 1904 Saint Petersburg-April 30, 1983 New York City) also known as Georgy Melitonovich Balanchivadze, Giorgi Melitonovitch Balanchivadze, Georgi Melitonovitch Balanchivadze or Giorgi Balanchivadze was a Russian choreographer and ballet master.

He is considered one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century, co-founding the New York City Ballet and choreographing over 400 works. Balanchine began his career training with the Imperial Ballet School in Russia and later choreographed for the Ballets Russes. He eventually settled in the United States in the 1930s and began working with the American Ballet. His unique style melded classical ballet technique with modern movements and emphasized speed and simplicity. Balanchine's works became renowned for their musicality and often featured collaborations with prominent composers such as Igor Stravinsky and George Gershwin. He received numerous accolades throughout his lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983.
