Tompall's solo album "The Outlaw" was released in 1976 and cemented his reputation as a rebel in the country music scene. The album featured the hit single "Put Another Log on the Fire (Male Chauvinist National Anthem)".

Tompall Glaser continued to record and perform throughout the 1980s and 1990s, but his influence on the outlaw country movement remained strong. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012, shortly before his death the following year at the age of 79.
