Irma Flaquer

Irma Flaquer (September 5, 1938 Guatemala City-April 5, 1980) was a Guatemalan journalist.

She is considered to be one of the most influential female journalists in Guatemala's history. She began her career as a radio broadcaster, working for Radio Panamericana and Radio Amaté in the 1960s. In 1971, she moved to television, working for the state-run TV station. She was known for her incisive interviews and reporting on political and social issues, including the country's long-running civil war. She was a vocal critic of the government and was briefly imprisoned in 1971 for speaking out against the regime. She continued to work as a journalist until her untimely death in 1980, when she was shot and killed by unknown assailants. Her death is widely believed to have been politically motivated. Today, Irma Flaquer is remembered as a trailblazing journalist who fearlessly fought for press freedom and the right to free speech.
