John Stephenson was a versatile voice actor and actor who worked extensively in American television, films, and animation. He was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Japan, eventually moving to the United States to pursue his acting career. Stephenson started his career as an actor in theatre and later transitioned to television and films, appearing in popular shows like The Rifleman and Gunsmoke, as well as films like The High and the Mighty and The Buccaneer.

However, Stephenson is best known for his work as a voice actor, lending his voice to several iconic characters in popular animated television shows of the 1960s and 1970s such as Mr. Slate in The Flintstones, Dr. Benton Quest in Jonny Quest, and Doggie Daddy in the Hanna-Barbera series Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy. He also voiced several characters in the popular animated series Scooby-Doo, including the iconic villain Dick Dastardly in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!.
