She died in aviation accident or incident.
Elsie Mackay was born to a Scottish father and American mother in Shimla, India. Her family moved to England when she was a child, where she attended school and pursued her passion for acting. She made her first stage appearance at the age of 17 and went on to appear in several plays and films.
Mackay's interest in aviation was sparked by a trip she took to the United States in the early 1920s. She took flying lessons and earned her pilot's license in 1927. She became the first British woman to hold a commercial pilot's license and the first woman to fly across the Irish Sea.
