Arundhati Devi
Arundhati Devi (November 27, 2014 Barisal-November 27, 1990) otherwise known as Arundhati Guha Thakurta, Arundhati, Arundhati Debi, Arundhati Mukherjee or Arundhati Mukhopadhyay was an Indian film director, actor, screenwriter, film producer, film score composer and costume designer. She had one child, Anindya Sinha.
Arundhati Devi was born in Barisal (now in Bangladesh) and later moved to Kolkata with her family. She started her acting career in 1955 with the film "Chirakumar Sabha" and went on to act in over 40 films. She also directed several films including "Chhutir Phande", "Kori Diye Kinlam" and "Kancher Swarga".
Apart from her work in the film industry, Arundhati Devi was actively involved in politics and social activism. She was a member of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and was known for her left-leaning ideology. She worked closely with legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, and was instrumental in organizing the Calcutta Film Society in the early 1940s.
In recognition of her contribution to Indian cinema, Arundhati Devi was honored with several awards including the National Film Award for Best Costume Design for the film "Meghe Dhaka Tara" in 1961. She passed away on her 76th birthday in Kolkata in 1990.
