John Kitzmiller was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, but moved to Italy in 1946 after serving in World War II. He began acting in Italian films such as "Cops and Robbers" and "The Secret of the Black Widow". He also made appearances in Hollywood films such as "African Queen" and "Dr. No".
Kitzmiller was a pioneer, being one of the first African American actors to achieve success in Italian cinema. He won the Best Actor award at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival for his role in "Bitter Rice".
In addition to his acting career, Kitzmiller was also involved in civil rights activism. He participated in the 1963 March on Washington and was one of the speakers at the event.
