Kyu Sakamoto

Kyu Sakamoto (December 10, 1941 Kawasaki-ku, Kawasaki-August 12, 1985 Ueno) also known as Kuy Sakamoto, Sakamoto, Kyu, Kyû Sakamoto, Hisashi Oshima, Hisashi Sakamoto, Kyu-chan or Sakamoto Kyū was a Japanese singer, songwriter, actor and tv personality. He had two children, Hanako Oshima and Yukiko Maisaka.

Kyu Sakamoto is best known for his hit single "Sukiyaki", which was released in Japan in 1961 and became an international hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States in 1963. The song was originally titled "Ue o Muite Arukou" ("I Look Up When I Walk"), but was given the title "Sukiyaki" in English-speaking countries as it is a well-known Japanese dish.

In addition to his music career, Sakamoto also acted in several films and television dramas, and was a popular television personality in Japan. He performed at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he sang "Sukiyaki" during the closing ceremony.

Tragically, Sakamoto died in a plane crash in 1985 at the age of 43. The crash occurred when Japan Airlines Flight 123 crashed into a mountain, resulting in the loss of 520 lives. Sakamoto was survived by his wife and two children.
