Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai (April 1, 1940 Central Province-September 25, 2011 Nairobi) otherwise known as Wangari Muta Maathai, Wangari Muta, Professor Wangari Maathai or Dr. Wangari Muta Maathi was a Kenyan politician, environmentalist, political activist and writer. She had three children, Waweru Mathai, Wanjira Mathai and Muta Mathai.

Wangari Maathai was the founder of the Green Belt Movement, which aimed to empower women and protect the environment through tree planting and other sustainable practices. She was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her contributions to sustainable development, democracy, and peace. She was also awarded numerous other honors throughout her lifetime, including the Right Livelihood Award and the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government. In addition to her activism, Maathai was a professor of anatomy and later became the first woman to chair a department at the University of Nairobi. Her legacy continues to inspire activists and environmentalists around the world.

She died in ovarian cancer.
