Vasilijus Matuševas

Vasilijus Matuševas (October 18, 1945-October 1, 1989) a.k.a. Vasilius Matushevas was a Lithuanian personality.

He was a talented artist, photographer and filmmaker who gained recognition during the Soviet era in Lithuania for his anti-Soviet works. Matuševas was known for his unconventional approach to art that was characterized by bold and unapologetic critiques of Soviet ideology.

In 1968, Matuševas was expelled from Vilnius University for participating in student protests against the Soviet regime. He continued to create political works through his art, often at great risk to himself. Many of his photographs and films were confiscated by the KGB and never returned.

Despite the dangers, Matuševas continued to inspire a generation of Lithuanian artists and activists. He died in a mysterious car accident in 1989, leading some to speculate that he was assassinated by the Soviet authorities. Today, his legacy lives on as a symbol of resistance to oppression and censorship.
