Thami El Glaoui

Thami El Glaoui (April 5, 1879 Morocco-January 23, 1956 Marrakesh) also known as Lord of the Atlas or El Haj T'hami el Mezouari el Glaoui was a Moroccan politician and caïd. He had three children, Si Brahim El Glaoui, Hassan El Glaoui and Abdessadeq El Glaoui.

Thami El Glaoui was a prominent figure in Moroccan history, serving as the Pasha of Marrakesh and the chief of the Berber Glaoua tribe. He gained his power and wealth by collaborating with the French colonial regime in Morocco during the early 20th century. It is said that he played a key role in preventing an armed uprising against the French in the Atlas Mountains in 1932.

During World War II, El Glaoui again chose to align himself with the French Vichy regime, which resulted in his eventual exile. After Morocco gained its independence in 1956, he was arrested and jailed for his collaboration with the French. However, he did not live long enough to face trial, as he passed away the same year.

El Glaoui was known for his lavish lifestyle, owning multiple palaces and properties throughout Morocco. He was also an art patron and had a personal friendship with famous painter Winston Churchill. Despite his controversial legacy, he remains an important figure in Moroccan history.

He died as a result of stomach cancer.
