Lim Chin Siong was a prominent figure in Singapore's political scene in the 1950s and 1960s. He co-founded the People's Action Party (PAP) in 1954, which went on to win power in Singapore's first general election in 1959. However, he was expelled from the party in 1961 due to ideological differences and accusations of being a Communist.

Following his expulsion from the PAP, Lim continued his activism and founded the socialist Singapore Alliance Party. He was subsequently arrested and detained without trial for several years under the Internal Security Act, which was aimed at combating Communist subversion. Lim was released in 1969 but was banned from entering politics.

Despite his ban from politics, Lim remained active in civil society and continued to speak out on social and political issues until his death in 1996. He remains a controversial figure in Singapore's political history, with some regarding him as a champion of the working class while others view him as a Communist sympathizer.

He died in myocardial infarction.
