Born in Alexandra, Gauteng, Alf Kumalo started taking photographs in the 1950s and became one of the most well-known photojournalists in South Africa. He was also a key figure in the struggle against apartheid, using his camera to document the daily lives of black South Africans and the injustices they faced.

Kumalo's photographs were published in many different newspapers and magazines, both in South Africa and around the world, and he won numerous awards for his work. In addition to his photojournalism, Kumalo also worked as an actor, appearing in several films and television shows.
