She died as a result of ovarian cancer.

Chernin was best known for her performances in the films "The Bloody Brood" and "Meatballs". She also appeared in numerous television series, including "The Beachcombers", "Street Legal", and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit". In addition to her successful acting career, Chernin was an accomplished writer and playwright. Her play "The Burden of Self Awareness" won the Canadian Authors Association Prize for Drama in 1986.
