Princess Charlotte, Duchess of Valentinois (September 30, 1898 Constantine-November 15, 1977 Paris) was an Algerian personality. Her children are Rainier III, Prince of Monaco and Princess Antoinette, Baroness of Massy.
Princess Charlotte was the daughter of the French comedian, actor and theater director Jean Gilbert, and the Algerian dancer, Marie Juliette Louvet. She grew up in France where she pursued her interest in the arts, particularly ballet. She studied under the tutelage of famous ballerinas and even joined the Ballets Russes.
In 1920, Princess Charlotte married Pierre de Polignac, a French aristocrat. The couple had two children, Rainier III, who later became the Prince of Monaco, and Antoinette, who became the Baroness of Massy. Princess Charlotte and de Polignac divorced in 1933, and the princess moved to Monaco with their children.
During World War II, Princess Charlotte served as a nurse in Monaco, tending to wounded soldiers. In 1944, she was instrumental in negotiating the release of Monaco from Nazi occupation.
Later in life, Princess Charlotte became known for her philanthropy and support of the arts. She established the Princess Grace Foundation to support young artists in Monaco.
