Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Mesquitinha moved to Brazil in his early years and started his career in the theatrical industry. He became famous for his participation in films of the chanchada genre, a popular form of Brazilian cinema during the 1940s and 1950s. Mesquitinha also directed and wrote scripts, and was known for his creativity and humor.
